A couple of weeks ago the paddlefishing season opened. We went out to watch them catch paddlefish and hopefully get a few photos as well. It looked like we were going to get rained on, but it held off and we were successful in seeing a paddlefish being caught. You use a strong pole like for deep sea fishing and you just have to snag the fish then fight it to the shore. Paddlefish are prehistoric fish and the season for catching them is very short usually a week. We’ve had so much rain and the river has risen so high that they had to close the fishing areas. I believe that they have recently been re-opened.
When we got to Intake, there was a film crew on the riverbank.
They look pretty official huh? The camerawoman walked by headed up to her truck and she was wearing a National Geographic hat. A man fishing asked the blonde when this piece would air. We started to pay a little more attention…. They really were from the National Geographic!
Now to the paddlefish…
We had about given up on watching one be reeled in when we heard the “Fish On!” We started running back towards the sounds.
Thus the name, Paddlefish.
His second cast of the day and he came up successful! It was also his second paddlefish caught. He said he caught one in North Dakota.
36 pounds is a good sized fish, but kinda small for a paddlefish.
